7 Tips for talking about the “Mommy Gap” on your resume

Returning to work after a baby break and worried about that resume gap?

Let's turn that "Mommy Gap" into your strength with some expert tips!

Confidently Addressing the Gap

It's a tough world for working moms, with many leaving jobs and facing challenges re-entering the workforce.

HeyMama's campaign encourages moms to use this gap as a growth period, showcasing how motherhood has prepped you for the professional world.

Preparation is Key

Start by practicing how you'll discuss your motherhood journey and the skills it's given you.

Writing a list or role-playing the conversation can build your confidence.

Honesty with a Limit

Be upfront about why you took a break, but there's no need for extensive details.

Use this as a chance to highlight how motherhood has equipped you with valuable skills.

Highlighting Diverse Skills

Don't just focus on motherhood.

Share other activities during your gap, like volunteer work or hobbies, that have honed your professional skills.

The Unique Edge of Motherhood

Talk about the specific skills motherhood has given you, like conflict resolution or time management, making you a more desirable candidate.

Reassuring Long-Term Commitment

Address any employer concerns by sharing your long-term career plans, reassuring them of your dedication and stability.

No Apologies Needed

Remember, you have nothing to apologize for.

The "Mommy Gap" is part of your unique skill set and doesn't define your professional capabilities.

In summary, the "Mommy Gap" doesn't have to be a setback.

It's all about framing this period as a time of growth, learning, and skill acquisition that enhances your value as an employee.

So, go ahead and confidently showcase your journey - you've got this, mama! 🌟💼👩‍👧‍👦

Going from a two-family income down to one has been a huge change for us. I know budgeting is key, but it’s hard to say no to the things we want and otherwise would not have blinked twice about buying before our little guy came along.

I hear you, it's such a juggle, right? We've all been there, saying 'no' when we used to say 'yes' without thinking. But hey, you're doing what's best for your little one, and that's what counts. Hang in there, mama! - Danielle 😊
