Mom's Field Guide

10 Travel Tips for Flying with a Baby

This is taken after passing through a severe storm in a plane. This being one of my first flights, I felt lucky to make it out safely and even luckier to capture such a beautiful sunset.

Does the idea of flying with your little bundle of joy feel more like preparing for a NASA mission?

Fear not!

We've got 10 tips to get you and baby soaring through the skies with ease and maybe even—dare we say it—enjoyment.

Feed During Take-off and Landing
One golden rule: have that bottle or breast ready for take-off and landing to help with baby's ear pressure. A pacifier dipped in gripe water can also work wonders if it’s not feeding time.

Babywearing for the Win
Strap your baby onto you with a soft carrier like Ergobaby. It's not just comfy for the baby but also keeps those airport germs at bay.

Backpack Over Shoulder Bag
A backpack-style diaper bag frees your hands and balances the load, making those frantic airport moments a bit more manageable.

Stock Up on Essentials
Bring enough formula, diapers, and food to last the whole journey plus an extra 10-15 hours. Better safe than hangry—trust us!

Don’t Forget the Medicine
Pack baby's Motrin and gripe water in your carry-on. Emergencies don’t wait, and neither should you.

Spare Outfits are a Must
The number of times we’ve been puked, pooped, or spilled on mid-air is embarrassingly high. Always pack an extra outfit for baby and a spare shirt for you.

ID for Your Mini-Me
Carry your baby’s ID just like you would your own. You never know when you’ll need to prove your angel is indeed under two.

Check for Extra Seats
Ask the gate agent if there are any open seats. The extra room could turn out to be a lifesaver.

Smart Boarding and Deplaning
Board first if you're flying solo to get situated. If you're with another adult, let them board first with the gear, and then you board last.

Diaper Changing 101
Most planes have a changing table in the restroom. On smaller planes, change the baby on a pad either in the galley or on your seat.

Conclusion:

So there you have it, fellow sky captains of the nursery!

With a little prep and these handy tips, you and your mini co-pilot will be ready to jet-set without the meltdown.

Happy flying! 🛫💕
