11 Easy, Mom-Tested Ways to Get Your Kids Moving

Is your kiddo getting enough exercise?

It turns out, only 1 in 4 children are getting the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise.

Shocking, right?

Just like us, kids need to move, groove, and occasionally break a sweat.

So how can we get our mini-mes off the couch and into action?

Here are 11 mom-tested tricks!

  1. Doctor's Advice: Start by chatting with your child's doctor about the best activities.

  2. Fun First: Choose a sport or activity that tickles their fancy - the funnier, the better!

  3. Family Time: Make exercise a family affair - quality time and workout in one!

  4. Age-Appropriate Activities: Pick activities suited to their age and development. (Sorry kiddo, no powerlifting for you yet!)

  5. Plan Ahead: A regular time and place makes it easier to stick to the routine.

  6. Safe Play: Make sure they're safe with appropemakriate gear and a secure environment.

  7. Active Toys: Equip them with jump ropes, balls, and other active toys.

  8. Role Model: Let them see you being active - actions speak louder than words!

  9. Play Together: Get involved and make it a shared experience.

  10. Set Screen Limits: Balance screen time with playtime.

  11. Don't Overdo It: If exercise interferes with their routine or becomes painful, it's time for a doctor's visit.

Fostering an active lifestyle for your kids can be easy and fun with the right strategies.

So let's make exercise a joyful part of their daily life!

Mixed-Fruit Juices: A Toxic Metal Surprise?

No need for panic, but this juicy tidbit might pique your curiosity.

A Tulane University study sampled 60 common beverages, including your kiddos' favorites: juices and plant-based milks.

Their findings?

Five out of the bunch exceeded federal drinking water standards for toxic metals. While lead turned up in 93% of samples, it mostly hung back below concerning levels.

However, arsenic, cadmium, and others got a bit rowdy in some mixed-fruit juices and plant milks.

"In toxicity, it's the dosage that makes the difference, so everything in moderation."

- Hannah Stoner, Tulane University

Not ideal playmates for our little ones, considering their nasty reputation for causing organ damage and cognitive harm.

So while we don't need to banish these beverages, let's aim for moderation and informed choices, Mamas!

Nurturing Empathy in Kids: It's Simpler Than You Think!

We’ve all heard it before – empathy is not just a feeling, it's a skill.

And just like bike riding or cookie baking, our little humans get better with practice.

Now, it's not about being the next Mother Teresa overnight.

It's the small, everyday things like caring for living things - babies, animals, plants - that can help them stretch those empathy muscles. Here's how:

Baby Steps to Empathy

Let’s start with babies.

Isn’t it adorable when our young ones mimic us in caring for their younger siblings? They may not realize it, but they're walking a mile in our mommy shoes.

Just like Daniel Tiger caring for his baby sister, Margaret, they're learning to imagine others' needs. Even fetching diapers and wipes counts!

Pet Project

Next, animals.

Remember the jar of baby ladybugs my kiddo has? She’s playing ‘pet-mom’ every day, checking if her tiny charges need food or water.

And if we don’t have pets? No problem! Stuffed animals can play a part in this empathy-building play.

Garden of Empathy

Lastly, there’s nothing like tending to plants to teach patience and care, much like nurturing relationships.

As they water their seedlings and watch them blossom, they'll learn to nurture empathy, just like those blossoming plants.

We’ll see our kiddos evolve. From showing concern for a crying friend to asking about others’ feelings, these are telltale signs of empathy.

With patience, love, and understanding, we’ll see our little ones growing into caring and compassionate individuals.

Now, isn’t that something to cheer about?
