Mom’s Field Guide
7 Common Discipline Mistakes By Parents
Let's be real: disciplining kids is a game of trial, error, and a pinch of comedy gold.
From preaching "don'ts" to expecting kid-size adult behavior, here's the lowdown on seven classic discipline fails—and how to fix 'em!
Don't Be a Negative Nancy
Raise your hand if you've said, "Don't hit your sister!" at least a dozen times today. Yeah, me too.
But Dr. Borba advises us to flip the script. Instead of saying what NOT to do, try guiding them toward what TO do.
Save the “No!” for a fork-meets-electrical-socket kind of moment.
Sky-High Expectations
Why doesn't your toddler understand that church isn't a concert venue?
Dr. Sonna reminds us that kids are still learning the social game.
So let's switch from "shushing" to teaching, 'cause kids are naturally the best copycats in town!
Monkey See, Monkey Do
You curse at the guy who cut you off, then wonder why your kiddo throws a tantrum.
Behavior boomerangs, folks. Time to apologize and model the kind of adulting we want our minis to emulate.
Intervention Overload
Ever been the drill sergeant who intervenes every time your kids are, well, just being kids?
Chill, mama! Unless it's a safety issue, let 'em be. They’ll tire themselves out—promise!
Talk is Cheap
Saying, "Turn off the TV" a gazillion times? They know you're bluffing.
Set clear rules and stick to 'em. No more running those "mom says" yellow lights!
Time-Out Timeout
So you sent your little Hulk to their room and now they're even madder.
Dr. Sonna suggests a "time-in." Sit with them, cuddle, and discuss what went haywire.
One Size Doesn't Fit All
Ever wonder why your go-to discipline tactic works on one kid but not the other?
Each mini-me is a unique little human, so tweak those strategies to fit the child!
Takeaway
Bottom line, mastering discipline is like perfecting a mom-bun: messy, unpredictable, but oh-so-necessary.
So laugh off the fails, celebrate the wins, and remember, you’re not alone in this wild parenting rodeo!
